Symposium: American Gothic

In celebration of the exhibition Gothic Art in the Gilded Age: Medieval and Renaissance Treasures in the Gavet-Vanderbilt-Ringling Collection and its catalogue publication Gothic Art in the Gilded Age, The Ringling Museum will host a symposium focusing on the theme of collecting and display of medieval and Renaissance art in Europe and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This symposium will be a gathering of American and foreign scholars from the Musée du Louvre, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hearst Castle, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and The Preservation Society of Newport County.

Gothic Art in the Gilded Age
Through April 4, 2010
Comprising around 350 paintings, sculptures, and works of decorative art including metalwork, furniture, ceramics, cameos, timepieces, and wax miniatures made across the European continent chiefly between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, this group of objects belonged to three successive owners: Émile Gavet, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont and John Ringling.

The Gavet-Vanderbilt-Ringling Collection contains objects fashioned from a wide variety of materials. Among the most intriguing of these works are those created using precious and semi-precious metals and enamel, while elaborate gilded frames and bases were placed on the objects in the 19th century in order to give the collection a unified look. Join us for a discussion and demonstration by contemporary artists whose expertise in the arts of metalwork and gilding provide a link to their medieval counterparts.
