Explore Music of the Harlem Renaissance and Women Composers in Backstage Onstage at the Historic Asolo Theater

Sarasota, FL – December 14, 2007 – Music lovers will enjoy the works of a diverse roster of composers as Backstage Onstage at the Historic Asolo Theater presents two new series: Music of the Harlem Renaissance and Women Composers: Romantic to Ragtime

The informative lecture/recitals are each presented in a four-part series on select Tuesdays at 11 a.m. 

Music of the Harlem Renaissance hosted by June LeBell, Jan. 15  & 29; Feb. 12; March 11

            The audience will join special guest artists such as Dick Hyman, one of America’s most prolific jazz artists, in exploring the music of the Harlem Renaissance. African-American music, theater, literature and visual arts flourished in the Harlem of the 1920s and 30s, greatly influencing the vision of visual  artists including Jacob Lawrence. This program celebrates the Jacob Lawrence: Three Series of Prints exhibition on view Jan. 26-May 4, 2008 in the Ulla R. and Arthur F. Searing Wing of the Ringling Museum of Art. This program coupled with the exhibition offers Museum visitors an opportunity to celebrate National Black History Month in February.

Women Composers: Romantic to Ragtime – with Dr. Judith Alstadter,January 22; February 5 & 26; March 4

            The audience will join pianist and popular lecturer Dr. Judith Alstadter as she combines performance and historical commentary in four original and thought-provoking programs about women composers.  She will begin with the life and times of pianist Clara Schumann who typified the 19th-century Romantic Era and then explore the women who characterized the Ragtime era of the early 20th-century and beyond. 

           Tickets for each program are $20 and $18 for Ringling Members.  Tickets for either entire four-part series may be purchased for $72 or $65 for Ringling Members.  Tickets are available by calling the Historic Asolo Theater Box Office at 941.360.7399 or www.ringling.org.

          Regular Museum admission to the exhibitions is not included in the theater program ticket price. Regular Museum admission is $19 for adults, $16 for seniors, $6 for children ages 6-17 and free for members and children age 5 and under.
