Barnum & Bailey in Europe
January 16, 2013 - May 6, 2013
Opening in London’s Olympia Hall on December 27, 1897, Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth set off on a European tour that ran through 1902 and brought the wonders of the American circus to more than 450 cities and towns. The Greatest Show on Earth was remarkably successful in its five years in Europe and returned with many new acts and performers who would become key figures in the American circus. One of the most critical elements of success was advertising to the continental audiences. The show's posters reflect the influence of European artists and printhouses, while maintaining the unique look of The Greatest Show on Earth.
